“The third album by Barrows depicts the experience of a man who is abducted from earth and brought to ‘Obsidion’, a place where dimension is indefinable and the boundaries of human consciousness cease to exist.”
Very good! With this in mind, you can already start hearing it.
While their sound is primarily ambient – very mesmerizing, captivatingly intense, dense and beyond sensorial, being sometimes almost a visual kind of ambient – with a soft atmosphere, whose anatomy is elaborated more with serenity than vigorous expectancy, although this informal essence can be pretty voluble, it has heavy, protruding inclinations towards minimalism, and silence also plays an axial place in their music. With calmer, well-devised melodies, Obsidion really drags the listener to another place, another dimension, another precious palace of stillness, with another perspective of life, way more bizarre and eccentric than this one we are used to. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting journey, artistically, as well as sensory, as their unusual style seems to combine dark ambient electronics, with deep space cosmic electro, and minimalist ambient experimental rock. The final result couldn’t have been more intriguing.
Obsidion is, literally, an almost one hour long trip, where your senses are propelled by a very organic sound, that acts as the main combustion to a deeply hallucinatory travel. Once you embark on this extensive journey, you can ascribe to your feelings a no return zone.
From an ostensibly calm ambient sound to a nefariously static ominous tune to a punk rock/ hardcore deconstructive dynamics to beautifully monumental symphonies, Barrows shows a widely extensive degree of musical abilities, that covers an amazing range of stylistic amplitudes.
With exceedingly extreme qualities, and a fantastic sense of originality, Obsidion is almost a psychedelic trip to another dimension. A record to be heard in the dark, with your eyes closed, given the power the sound has, to exert over the listener. A triumph for experimental music, this album reaches interesting milestones, that gives to this group in particular a tremendous sense of majesty, in what concerns their vigorous level of artistry.
