From the Dark Hills of the Past is an album by Brazilian black metal duo Cold Mist, released on June 15. Almost forty one minutes long, the record has nine tracks: From the Hills of the Dark Past, Nightmysteries, A Funeral Frost, Triumph of Cruelty, Interlude, Deadly Mist, Emotions of a Full Terror, Old Domains and Outro. Exhibiting the classic traits of the genre, From the Dark Hills of the Past is a surprisingly good BM album, and Cold Mist deserves to be classified among the most marvelous contemporary acts of the genre. With a formidable respect for tradition, but brightly showcasing a style of their own, Cold Mist unravels a sinister, somber and elusive ferocity, more aggressive and hostile than usually seen. With exceedingly rapid and brutal harmonies being also a constant mainstay of their style, From the Dark Hills of the Past – as an album as well as an art work – can be considered a surprisingly lucid and intensely peculiar record.

With powerful and perceptive guitar lines, that serves as the basis for ferocious melodies that perpetually drown in a world of permanent darkness never to be properly seen or understood, the music of Cold Mist is completely energized by furious rhythms of vigorous strength and corrosive desolation, that basically never propose a truce. Heavier than ordinary black metal, the abrasiveness of Cold Mist’s sound is not only purely genuine and spontaneously energized: implodes from within the axis of its own fundamental origins and principles, that are mainly centered on a virtuous originality, concentrated on a higher scale of qualities that comprehends and masterly creates the genuine spirit of black metal.

Remembering “mainstream” black metal acts like Cradle of Filth, Cold Mist has potential to ignite a solid career on the underground. With a genuine sensibility that perceives all the possibilities concealed within the genre, the duo knows how to conceive more aggressive, direct and rough harmonies – that sounds imperiously sophisticated at the same time –, somewhat bringing the genre back to its roots. In fact, working over the basic precepts of BM, Cold Mist converts them to something never experienced before, delivering it in an intact, fresh and pure state.

Basically promoting a new form of conceiving and executing black metal, Cold Mist unravels before its audience an excellent album, that has all the necessary requirements to become a reference for the genre. From the Dark Hills of the Past, undoubtedly, has revealed itself to be a majestic work, that deserves to be highlighted to all BM enthusiasts out there.
