This one by Swiss black metal quintet ColdCell belongs to the latter category, especially as far as intensity is concerned. This is one of those albums to listen to when you no longer see the point in life, when you're depressed or when you need to exercise some demons.
We all need to exorcise our demons once in a while.
Although the music if ColdCell mainly refers to black metal, I think it's safe to say that you can find influences from sludge, doom and the current post-black metal/blackgaze scene. No wonder bands from all kinds of styles comes to mind, from Darkthrone to AmenRa. The music is slower than standard black metal but that does not harm the depressive and chaotic atmosphere, on the very contrary. It's built on pain, despair and angst. It thrives on nightmarish soundscapes and dissonant guitars, supported by methodical drums and - obviously - fearsome grunts and screams.
Songs like opener 'Growing Girth' and my absolute favorite 'Tainted Thoughts' gnaw and crawl their way through the speakers and into the listener's brain with loads of brute force. Furthermore, some passages have a dark carnival thing going on, something theatrical, something I can't really explain. Maybe it's me. Like I already wrote; occupied brain. Perhaps it's best that I just crank up the volume to ear shattering levels and start exercising some of those demons. For something like that, this album is perfect. Obviously it comes highly recommended to all fans of extreme atmospheric music, no doubt about that.
