What a strange little creature it is. I wondered if the album is equally strange and colorful. In a way it is, especially if you think in terms of Colour Haze. So I jammed the disc into my computer and started listening. Now, I still don't know what kind of creature that is, but I know I am a fan of Echolot.
Echolot is a trio from Basel, Switzerland. They formed in 2014 and released a first full-length in 2016. That album was named 'I' and is now followed by 'II', 'III', 'IV' and 'V', combined on a gem named 'Volva'. These four tracks are long jams, lasting ten to over sixteen minutes and culminating the best elements from doom metal, psychedelic rock and stoner rock. This is pretty much the stuff I can't get enough of, so in my opinion this is a great album.
Alongside Colour Haze, these Swiss seem to have been inspired by Pink Floyd, Mars Red Sky, Black Sabbath, Elder, Hawkwind and so on. It might be space rock, recorded on a searing hot desert planet, somewhere far far away. But most of all, these are highly immersive pieces of psychedelic doom metal. So fans of the aforementioned bands can easily place this album between their favorites. This is pure psychedelic enjoyment.
