Ambre Gris is an album released on November 2, by French black metal act Edremerion. Forty three minutes long, the record has five tracks: Deûle, Lèpre, Ambre Gris, Déchets Nés and ...Mais les étoiles ne sont pas pour l'Homme. A formidable, imperiously dynamic and versatile record, with a nihilistic and sensational fury that oversees the rude despondency of its own melodies, Ambre Gris is an album fuelled by a belligerent, but vigorous strength, whose salutary and competent level of originality definitely deserves to be highlighted, as a tempestuous and exponential victory for the continual development of black metal not only as a genre, but as a complex, poetic and profoundly expressive form of artistry.

With a sincere, but abrasive level of cohesion, that floats through the emergent tonalities of its own artistic and graceful sonorous faculties, the musical direction on this marvelous work is definitely somber and cynically sinister, though pulverized with grains of inquisitive, discreet and surreal streams of innocent melancholy, which definitely adds an element of coherent and pungent grace on its flexible, though hostile sonorous layer. Nevertheless, the album is prominently heavy, and full of furious and rapidly aggressive melodic dispositions, that flirts and intelligently fits in with it’s more cautious and slow musical counterparts.

A very expressive and audacious work, that perfectly understands the ambitions of its own horizontal possibilities, potentialities and propensities, Ambre Gris definitely is an album that projects a brutal and hazardous dose of nitroglycerine into the genre, with angered, abrasive guitar lines and an atypical vocal style, more guttural, severe and throaty – as opposed to the normally funereal acute razor blade infernal screams commonly associated with the genre – at least in certain passages, making this album definitely suitable to be labeled as blackened death metal, though the similarities to this particular subgenre are also somewhat restricted. One way or another, Edremerion practices and exposes its own particular form of black metal, which is way more imperative, authorial, gracefully creative and dynamic than usual.

An interesting album, that definitely establishes the highest conjuncture of standards for its particular style, Ambre Gris is beautiful, drastic and inventive; formidably despises all limitations of the genre, applying to its most brutal elements a level of cohesion and sophistication that is undoubtedly peculiar. With a sonorous majesty and an abundant creativity that knows exactly when darkness begins, Ambre Gris is a precious and efficient collection of everlasting symphonies, that understands marvelously the vastness of its own potential and virtuous qualities.
