"Cool', I thought, "a brand new Kai Reznik album", but what happened next made me question everything I had ever known about this artist. When I first saw the name in my inbox, my memory catapulted me back to ten-twelve years ago when I downloaded a bunch of techno tunes. One of those tunes was written and recorded by Kai Reznik, or so I had always believed. I loved it and played it quite a lot until my external harddisk decided to commit suicide by falling off the table. When this album came in, I was very curious but I soon found out that there was little to nothing to be found about Kai Reznik, certainly not that old techno tune I loved so much.

Nonetheless, I decided to do my job as a music reviewer and gave this album a chance. At first I was quite surprised about what I heard but gradually, I began to like this rather unique and fresh approach to electronic music. Today, I still have no idea if the Kai Reznik I have known for all these years is the same person or if I made it all up but I am sure that 'Awkward Motions' is a great album, one that will undoubtedly appear in my day to day playlist a lot.

What I like most about it, is the different set of influences that found their way into these songs. On one hand, you can place this among your modern day electronic pop music records but on the other hand, ambient, IDM and the bombastic approach of acts like Bersarin Quartet is present as well. The result are nine in-your-face trip hop tunes, often with vocals, that drag the whole genre into a gloomy and mysterious corner.

My favorite here is "You Killed Me First", a downtempo industrial pop song that even seems to contain elements from doom metal. Yes, doom metal. It's a magnificent and intense track, one for which I just invented the term "gothic IDM". The music scene is getting ridiculously comprehensive and I love every second of it. So do yourself a favor and check this album out. It's a remarkable piece of work. I promise you.
