I think my fascination with this album started in the fourth second. 'Beyond The Wall Of Sleep' is definitely one of the best intros I've ever heard. Since it's December already, I'll just call this song the "intro of the year" and get it over with. It's a bombastic and gloomy harbinger of jaw dropping things to come. For starters, it shows that Lord Shades is not content with the traditional death metal instrumentation. Of course, guitars, drums, bass and vocals are the foundation but upon that the band uses heaps of other stuff.Same goes for the music. There is place for intense symphonic aspects, for grinding guitars but also for traditional tribal drums and wind instruments.
Obviously, throughout the entire album all these instruments and influences result in elaborate extreme metal anthems, loaded with variation. That, and you can occasionally bang your head severely. I suggest you do, certainly if you love to listen to excellent musicians and well-attuned bands. No doubt that these guys are skilled and seasoned. It's like listening to a mix of Benediction, Opeth and Dimmu Borgir. Is that good? Fuck yeah it is. I'm quite positive that for me this is one of the best albums of the year, certainly in the symphonic metal area. So yeah, this comes highly recommended. Check it out and join me in hoping that these guys will tour Europe soon.
