What happens when you request no more and no less than ten recommendations for the Incubate festival from some Merchants Of Air writers?  Absolute panic, that's what you get.  Each of us went through over 300 artists, bands and project and each of us ended up with a huge list of what we wanted to see.  Björn and Serge already managed to eliminate some of them (which they will probably go see anyway).  Oh, and there's still the art program, the debates, the movies,...  This is going to be an exhausting week, that's for sure.

Joerik's List

The Black Heart Rebellion
Belgium finest post rock band will blow you away with their unique sound.
I’ve seen these guys play a few shows, they never failed to amaze me!

Newmoon
Belgian shoegaze band, who sound astonishing live, don’t forget your earplugs though.
These guys are on tour with Touche Amore at the moment!

Noveller
This  one-girl band uses her guitar and some effects to create an ethereal landscape of noises and drones. For people who love to be caught in the music, and dream away for a while.

Converge
Converge are one of the best hardcore bands of this millennium, just listen to their album Jane Doe. This is a band I really look forward to!

Björn's list

Merzbow
Seriously, do I need to tell why you have to go and see Merzbow?

Alcest
They were easily the best on Graspop this year, and that was in a festival tent. Just think what an intimate club show will be like!

Shining
Not the crappy Swedish black metal Shining, this is the übercool Norwegian blackjazz Shining. Having seen them supporting Devin Townsend twice, and after seeing them blow off the roof of the tent on Graspop I can only say; do yourself a favour and go see this killer live band. Their records do NOT do this band justice and they should be enjoyed in the flesh.,

Camera
Psychedelic krautrock your cup of tea? Do acts like Can, Neu!, Emeralds and Cloudland Canyon get you all hot and bothered? Go see Camera, and while you're at it,  check out their awesome 'Radiate' album!

No Joy
They call it 'Pure Fucking Trip Metal!' themselves. I just call it 'the best noiserock/indiepop/shoegaze band that almost nobody has heard of, yet'. About to take Europe and the rest of the world by storm. Be the first of your hipster friends to be able to say you were there at their dawn of world domination. Essential.

Lifelover
A mix of Depressive Suicidal Black Metal, post-punk and alternative rock.. What's not to like?

Rapoon
With an output of nearly 50 albums of dark ambient in close to to 25 years of dark ambient,  this should please most lovers of said genre.

Bow Aether Group
The fact that Glen Steenkiste of Hellvete and formerly of Sylvester Anfang makes up one third of Bow Aether Group is enough incentive to go and see this. In my always humble opinion of course..

Monnik
Shamanic guitar loops and drones at it's best. Go and support this great Belgian act. And even though I don't know him personally, he's apparently a really nice person too! Win-win!!

Fckn Bstrds
I remember seeing these guys yeeeaaars ago on some obscure harsh noise festival in some abandoned warehouse and the fact that I still remember them is a sure sign of them making a lasting impression. Absolutely demented and loud. Definitely NOT for the faint of heart!

Serge's list

Secrets Of the Moon
After not listening to black metal for years, Secrets Of The Moon got me right back on track with their stunning and bombastic sound.  I still regard them as one of the best bands in the genre

James Welburn
Guitar drones and industrial pounding drums, two of my favorite things in the world. Besides, 'Hold' is arguably one of the best drone albums this years. This will make up for a mesmerizing show, that's for sure

Ufomammut
Stoner doom at an immense level with monolithic riffs and tons of fuzz.  Time to indulge ourselves in delightful darkness.  I've seen them live before but it's always a blast

Ed Rush
Really Serge, Ed Rush?  Well, yeah, Ed Rush was one of the very first people who made the EDM areas at festivals interesting for me.  His drum & bass music has always been uplifting and a nice variation from the guitar loaded music I'll be witnessing at Incubate.

The Mary Hart Attack
Amazing post-punk from Ghent and Aalst (Belgium).  We discovered them when they supported Alice In The Cities in a small chapel in Antwerp and we're fans ever since.

Dirk Serries & Rutger Zuydervelt
Just listen to their brilliant cooperative album and you'll know why you have to see this if you're a fan of ambient, drones and delightful weirdness.  There's decades of experience between these guys so you know it's going to be good.

Ggu:ll
These guys have become my Incubate favorites since I've seen them already twice in Tilburg and they always crush the audience with a mindblowing sound.  This is one of the best doom acts in the history of the genre.

Monophona
I liked their album a lot but when Monophona enchanted me at Dunk! festival I was absolutely sold.  This is one of the best female fronted electronic acts today and I'll be damned if I miss it.

Rapoon
Decades ago I discovered Rapoon and today he still is a reference for decent dark ambient.  Besides, I think this is a once in a lifetime experience that you have to see.

Jessica 93
Unlike the previous nine acts, I have never heard about this one before.  Yet, I wanted one act in this list that represents exactly what kind of music discovery a trip to Incubate really is.  I chose this purely from the previews on the website.  A one-man post-punk/shoegaze band, armed with guitars, bass and loop station.  This can't disappoint.
