Ripley Johnson & Sanae Yamada seemed completely unaffected by the heat. As soon as they pulled their psychedelic kraut train in motion, there was simply no stopping Moon Duo. From the very first tone, this concert was full of energy and it raged on until they ended their set with a splendid version of the Stooges' 'No Fun'. The audience seemed to love it, although they were not blessed with the same level of energy as the band on stage. Many were merely nodding their head and standing in puddles of their own sweat. Still, Moon Duo delivered an excellent gig, much like their impressive passage on Desertfest I liked their concert back then and - being able to give them my whole attention - I loved them now.
In fact, I enjoyed the Moon Duo concert so much that the beginning of Chelsea Wolfe's concert was not as impressive and magnificent as I had expected. For the record, I had missed Wolfe' s former passages, all of them, so I was really looking forward to this gig. The opening sounded somewhat chaotic, perhaps affected by the searing heat. Nonetheless, gradually the band seemed to get into gear and with each song, the concert seemed to improve. Not only did it get better, probably because of the delightfully distorted guitars, it also became a whole lot darker. Eventually, the whole thing would turn into an immersive and occult doom metal spectacle, much to the delight of the many men and women who showed up.
In all, obviously, this was a great evening with two highly enjoyable concerts (if you're into total psychedelic darkness, that is). My personal music taste says that Moon Duo won but I'm sure many people will disagree with me on that one. Fact is, both act simply delivered the goods and in a professional venue like Trix, that almost always results in an evening that people won't forget easily. So yes, it was definitely worth the wait and I'm damn sure that both these acts will appear on our gig-review section more often...
