A few days ago, I had the chance to review (read) 'Chamrosh', the new album by old school black metal horde From The Vastland. Shortly after, I sent Sina (guitars, lyrics) a message for Songs With Stories, mainly because I like to know where their relentless and vintage  sound exactly comes from. A few days later, I received an awesome journey through black metal history.

Burzum - Jesu død

Filosofem album from Burzum was the first black metal album that I listened to, it was more than 16 years ago when a friend of mine who was living in Austria in that time came back for his vacation and brought me a copy of the album. Back in that time I was fan of death metal but I remember when I listened to this album for the first time it felt really strange, everything was different when it comes to the sound and the whole atmosphere of the music. It was dark, mysterious and unknown. I remember that I listened to the album 5 times in a row, just to understand it! And it was the time when everything changed in my music taste.

Darkthrone - En ås i dype skogen

Darkthrone is always a special band to me. The early albums of the band still sounds fresh and great after all the years. I remember this one from Transylvanian Hunger was one of the first BM song that I tried to cover and learn (However I covered just a few songs and they were mostly songs from the band Death), you know technically the riffs are simple but it is pure and played with spirit and that is what makes it great. And then after 14 years or something when I got involved with the Blackhearts documentary (a Norwegian Doc film about BM which I am one of the main characters) I met Nocturno Culto for the first time (since he is also in the film) and it was awesome to see how this legend is a great guy.

Gorgoroth - Crushing the Scepter (Regaining a Lost Dominion)

The Pentagram album is one of the best albums of Gorgoroth, one of the classics now (However, all of their albums are great, you know) but this song, "Crushing the Scepter" is so raw and wild. It is grim and aggressive, the guitar sound and especially the vocals. And I love the song structure, the great riffs just comes one after another and to me the ending riff is the best one. You just want it to be repeated again and again. Gorgoroth is one of the controversy bands from Norway and still working in the true spirit.

Marduk - Deme Quaden Thyrane

Marduk is one of my favorite of all time band. After all the changes in their line-up still they are great. Their music is always powerful. "Those of the unlight" and “Opus Nocturne" are their best in my opinion and this song is one of the darkest Marduk song to me. It contains a lot of atmospheric parts/riffs and it is just great. The song starts very mysterious and drums comes in with the toms and starts to build it up and then the blast-beats parts, it is just dark and evil. Well, you don’t need to say more about Marduk, they always make great music.

Belenos - Mélancolie

Long time ago, it was the time when I was trying to discover some new black metal bands and a friend of mine suggested me to listen to Belenos. It is a French band, you know and when I checked it I was just amazed by its great music. Especially the early works of the band. My favorite album is Triste pensée. There are many elements to this album that still continues to amaze me as time goes. And mélancolie song is the best track of the album to me. It's really gloomy and atmospheric. Very classical structure in the song, aggressive, grim with a hateful vocals. All the riffs and melodies are great. In the early works of Belenos you just get slightly celtic/pagan feeling but not too much.
