Songs With Stories - Angelina Yershova

Not long ago, Marc (from Marc's Lounge Room) told me about an amazing composer he heard on Radio Klara (Belgian radio station, specialized in classical music, jazz and other blissful sounds). Since Marc usually suggests high quality music, I quickly decided to give it a go. And yes, I was sold immediately. The combination of piano with gloomy soundscapes and hints of jazz were a delight to listen to.

So I bought the album, 'Piano's Abyss' (yes, I still do that), wrote a review (read) and sent the link to the composer, Angelina Yershova. Apparently, she liked my little write-up and my (sincere) compliments about her music and she agreed to join our Songs With Stories. With these, she also made me discover some other great acts.

Sergei Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30

I love music of Sergei Rachmaninoff. He is the great figure of the tradition of Russian Romanticism. Having grown up in a classical music environment I can honestly say that it certainly influenced my composition/piano language a lot, or at least how I perceive it. I especially love his masterpiece - the third concerto for piano and orchestra! He wrote it while he was far from home and you can totally feel the melancholy, love and passion in the music. Often, when I'm lonely, I feel the need to immerse myself into the music of this great composer.

György Ligeti - Lux Aeterna (1 Hour Loop - from 2001: A Space Odyssey)

This historic piece by the Hungarian composer, György Ligeti "Lux Aeterna" , inspires me very much and apart from this it was used by Stanley Kubrick in his historical film "2001 A Space Odyssey". What strikes me about this song is the haunting and otherworldly beauty, dissonant harmonies that scare and yet mesmerize you at the same time in a mysterious and delightful way. Listening to this song, or strong feeling to stop in time and experience the frame of sublime eternity. I find Ligeti's compositional language very modern and consistent even with current drone music: these "acoustic drones" that shape space and time and leave you with a sense of suspension and infinite beauty.

Brandt Brauer Frick - Schamane

I am a huge fan of Brand Brauer Frick - Techno Project of Berlin. Among the band's many beautiful productions I especially liked "Shamane ". In this song I like the bold intersection between Techno and Contemporary Music. I had the opportunity to hear them live and I was very emotionally charged, filled with extremely intense vibrations. Certainly I can identify myself in an experimentation dimension between styles and genres. For me it's very exciting to hear these bold artists, ready to launch themselves into adventures with such passion and dedication.

Ken Karter - MX-01.11 [Stroboscopic Artefacts SAM021]

I enjoyed Ken Karter's electronic project. His distorted and powerful sound intrigues me greatly. In particular, I find this output on Stroboscopic Artefacts the right measure of taste and class where every sound element seems zoomed and accurate in every detail. I also find the structural transformation very balanced. The sound quality is amazing! I highly appreciated the peculiarity of "order and precision in everything" in Ken Karter's production.

Archive - Bullets

I really like the song Bullets by Archive , the legendary British group. A few years back I incessantly listened to their 2009 album, "Controlling Crowds". I was entering a psychedelic and obsessive loop - reflections on life and death, pain and joy, sweet suffering that helps human beings evolve and change. A year ago I had the chance of seeing Archive live. I was completely amazed with their incredibly explosive energy charge. A live like a constant and psychedelic crescendo from the beginning to the end, to experience over and over again.
