Last month, the album 'Enter Oblivion' by post rock act Glasgow Coma Scale unexpectedly provided me with a burst of creativity. Obviously, the album ended up in my day-to-day playlist, as all good albums do. Because the album worked so inspiring, I wondered what had inspired the band to create this kind of music and this stunning album. Soon after Marek (bass) sent us his 'Songs With Stories'

Black Sabbath - Planet Caravan

I decided to start with a classic: Planet Caravan by Black Sabbath. The group laid the foundation for lots of genres and lots of groups that I appreciate. It is basically the core element like the base drum in a drum set. Planet Caravan is rather a calm, dreamful and psychedelic song. I especially like the rhythm section and the fragility, which is created by vocals that seem to come from the background. Depending on the mood you can also choose the cover of Pantera that sounds considerably more like „power“ and „production“. I prefer the original.

Metallica - Orion

My adventure itself with music of a tougher approach started with Metallica. I was a big fan of the band and I had the old albums on tapes which were running up and down on my Walkman. As most fans I particularly liked the first four albums, Kill ‘Em All was like a punch in your face. There is no other album, where they sound so wild, fresh, young, I would even call it – punk. But because of the connection to GCS I have chosen a composition from their second album Master Of Puppets. The bass line in the second part of the track is just phenomenal, while the following guitar riffs make the song incredibly smooth.

Social Distortion - Down on the world again

I used to listen to lots of punk and hardcore music back in the late nineties. I was into skateboarding at that time and in terms of music there were only two ways - hip-hop or punk. Our crew decided to go for the latter. On top of this, there was a huge music scene in the area around Chemnitz and Leipzig (Germany), which gave us the opportunity to visit lots of concerts. It was a very wild and enjoyable time where especially the city of Leipzig was like an oasis of subculture to me. Skating and punk rock / hardcore walked hand in hand. Here is a song by Social Distortion, which I’ve seen performing live on their White Light, White Heat, White Trash tour in 1997.

Kyuss - Whitewater

Having my roots in punk rock I couldn’t really deal with this extremely bassy, booming music in the beginning. But my older brother and some friends of mine were tirelessly trying to introduce me to a band called Kyuss. They were just mad about them. At some point in time they finally succeed and I had to acknowledge that this stuff is truly outstanding.
From then on stoner-rock took over. If you don’t start at least tapping with your foot while listening to Whitewater, you are either deaf or you simply did not understand, what this music is all about.
Kyuss taught me to listen patiently to their songs, which since then didn’t have to tell their story within three and a half minutes.

ISIS - In Fiction

My first experience with instrumental post-rock / post metal.
A friend of mine played this song when we were on vacation in Switzerland. I was immediately blown away, even the track got along completely without vocals.
Most of all I liked the calm, long evolving part in the beginning, which at the same time suggests something gloomy and dark and finally turns into a killer riff at 5:30 min. This is one of my personal highlights in post metal, ever!
