Belgian writer Tamara E. Williams and the Readeos YouTube channel have revealed part 3 of their Lapses cycle. After Ashtoreth and TraumaSutra, the music on this edition has been provided by minimal drone act Hellstorm Of Flaming Nothingness, a project by Merchants Of Air writer Björn. As usual, the background is painted by another crew member, Paul (apparently, he also has a website with his paintings, click here).

With all this Merchants Of Air involvement, we can now also confirm that the entire 'Lapses' cycle will be released on the Merchants Of Air bandcamp page. The release will feature all tracks, plus the entire story on a pdf. We don't have a date yet since the story cycle is still being worked on and expanding. More details will be revealed soon.

Hellstorm Of Flaming Nothingness comments: 'As an avid reader, i always wonder what music would work best as a soundtrack for a particular chapter when I'm reading. For me to collaborate with Tamara on her Lapses project is a great opportunity and very insightful. The piece I chose is a reworking of a track from the 'Futile' ep that was partly inspired by a Clive Barker binge-reading session.'

Tamara E. Williams comments: 'Part one was partially influenced by the music, part two by the painting. For part three, I needed to look forward and get the story on track again. The minimalism of the music certainly helped in creating the gloomy atmosphere. I'm looking forward to the upcoming parts. The basic story is in my head but things can change, depending on the music and the painting, that's a whole new sense of artistic freedom. '

Of course, if you want to read the story at your own tempo (with a Dutch translation coming soon), you can go to Tamara E. Williams' website (click here). To be able to follow the story, you also might want to read parts one and two. For that, click here.

The album, titled 'Morana' will be released by the Unexplained Sounds Group and curated by Raffaele Pezzella (Sonologyst). 'Morana' was recorded live and is dedicated to a Baltic and Slavic goddess associated with seasonal rites based on the idea of death and rebirth of nature. She is an ancient goddess associated with winter's death and rebirth and dreams.

On March 4th, Ashtoreth will perform on Rituals Of Frost in the Belgian city of Mol. Coincidentally,  several other acts from the earlier mentioned 'Lapses' cycle, will make their presence too, including Stratosphere and Sitka. You can find all information on the official facebook event page.

Altar Of Betelgeuze unveil new video

Picture
Finnish stoner death metal horde Altar Of Betelgeuze have revealed a video for the song 'Among the Ruins'. Vocalist Matias Nastolin comments:

"Among the Ruins is the title and final track of the upcoming album. As with the debut full-length earlier, we decided that the album should be finished with the longest and most epic one, once again. This song builds up to a massive and surprisingly groovy riff, which is supported by fierce, yet dynamic vocals. The middle part, on the other hand, gives the song a chance to breath a bit with its interplay between the rhythm section, accompanied by lead guitar harmonies. After the song comes to its conclusion, one can admit that "the devastation can not be undone"!

Cadaveria release Type O Negative cover

Horror metallers Cadaveria celebrate the release of "Mondoscuro" EP vinyl edition (read our review) (limited to 500 copies-black / 100 copies-white worldwide) unleashing the first of three singles extracted from this EP. "Christian Woman", cover of Type O Negative, is the first one, now available via all digital stores, here.

Cadaveria Herself commented: "This is the very first vinyl release of our history and we are very pleased and excited. Usually we produce music videos along with our releases, but this time I thought to play with images in a different way. I will impersonate the titles of three songs from Mondoscuro, realizing three special shots, that will converge in the cover artwork for Mater Tenebrarum, Dominion of Pain and Christian Woman singles. We will release them monthly through digital stores, starting today till April. Today is the day of Christian Woman, our homage to Peter Steele.”

Intoxicated Rage reveal new track

Picture
Boston MA’s Intoxicated Rage are one of the leading lights of the New England heavy metal scene. Influenced by Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Motorhead, and Black Sabbath, vocalist and guitarist Giuseppe Mellone announces in a statement of intent these heavy hitters are “here to kick your ass.” Unleashing their 2016 EP 'Patient Zero Boston', Intoxicated Rage has 2017 locked and loaded with the upcoming release of their first full length ‘Kill The King’ featuring roots in traditional heavy metal and thrash.

Mellone comments on the release

“We just wanted something that could get the message across of who we are. We are doing that in this album and we will do it again on the next. Currently, we are working on different material that almost breaks through these classifications. We want people to hear us on the radio and automatically identify us from our sound.”

Serpico release new single and music video

Picture
Finnish Hard Rock group Serpico have released a new single and music video for their track "Ain't Better To Leave". The music video reminisces the bygone era when music videos were viewed from VHS tapes recorded on by older relatives that had cable TV, and when heavy rock grew in popularity amongst the youth culture yet was disproved by older generations.

The video was inspired by the band's previous visit to the U.K. Serprico wasn't that organized with their tour planning and found themselves in a strange city without a place to sleep. After several twists and turns they found themselves in the company of local suburban-princesses. They had to sway intimately to Bon Jovi songs in exchange for accommodation, beer and cigarettes. Of course in the video you cant see any swaying to Bon Jovi songs and it doesn't make any reference to that previous story. But it was a trip to be remembered! "

Reflection return after eight years, album details

Picture
Reflection, the driving force of Hellenic Epic/Doom Metal, will be celebrating their 25th anniversary next year and they are now back, with their fourth album, “Bleed Babylon Bleed”! It’s been eight years since the band’s last offering, making this an eagerly awaited release; and with a new vocalist in their ranks this becomes an even more anticipated release!

As this is quite a special release, Pitch Black Records' label founder, Phivos Papadopoulos, felt the need to briefly comment:

“Our 50th release just had to be special. And this is as special as it could get, for a number of reasons! I remember discovering REFLECTION in the early ‘90s and receiving their demo tape after writing to them and how I was blown away by their music. Even more importantly though, since the day we first made contact, a truly unique bond has been formed between myself and the band’s founder and guitarist, Stathis Pavlantis.

A bond that has certainly stood the test of time and has grown more and more throughout the years; we are not just friends, we are family now and the emotions associated with releasing this on my own record label, twenty-something years after we first “met”, cannot easily be put into words. I agreed to sign REFLECTION without even listening to their new album (which I haven’t regretted one tiny bit of course)! Here’s another fine example of that something that makes metal so magical and special I guess!”

Special mention should be made to the guest appearance of Mats Leven of CANDLEMASS. Besides his majestic input on this album, this is also of particular importance since CANDLEMASS have always been a primary influence for REFLECTION. Other noteable guest appearances include Albert Bell (FORSAKEN) and Kostas Tokas (RELOAD).

Terraformer is a Belgian trio based in Liège. They bring heavy post-metal tunes since 2010. They previously released The Sea Shaper (2012) and Creatures (2014) on dunk!records. Mineral is their third full album. Rather than a concept album, it's an overall theme that frames the mind of the record. Doomy but still melodic. Expect epic climaxes, tearful melodies, and heaviness. Unlike the artwork might warn you, it's not prog/acid tunes escaped from the 70's.

Read our review here.

Terraformer is also confirmed for dunk!festival 2017.

The Aegean video was directed by Jeroen Cluckers, a Belgian media artist.

Mineral is recorded by Terraformer at the Warehouse. Mixed and mastered by Tobias Stieler (Kokomo). Artwork by Fabrice Bovy.
The album comes on 180g vinyl in two limited color editions: black splatter on purple or plain orange. Release: Feb. 16th.

Ddent release new video

Picture
Parisian mystic post-metal outfit Ddent have unveiled their debut video "Kohol", a track from the album "آكتئاب". Directed by Christophe Acker, the video shows a man (Hamda Yacoub, the artist responsible for the album artwork) making ‘kohol’ or ‘khol’, a powder used by ancient desert tribes to protect their eyes from the sand, drought, and disinfect their wounds. As for each song on the album, the Oriental-sounding title "Kohol" draws its inspiration from Arab psalms. Ddent's debut album "آكتئاب" was recorded by Chris Fielding at Skyhammer Studio and mastered by James Plotkin. Eight heavy instrumental pieces that become one to depict the journey of a horseman throughout depression. Lunar, massive and goosebump-inducing. (read our review here)

Ashtoreth & Tamara E. Williams release "Readeo"

Picture
As a unique and exciting crossover between music and literature, the YouTube channel "Readeos" has revealed a cooperation between Belgian drone act Ashtoreth and writer Tamara E. Williams. The video features Ashtoreth's exclusive track 'Whisper' and the first part of 'Lapses', a mysterious short story cycle.

Ashtoreth comments:

"Working with field recordings has always been of interest to me. I remember vividly the first time I used a microphone and a tape recorder as a kid to just record the sounds that surrounded me and listen back to them afterwards in awe. And it has been since my days in sound art collective Building Transmissions (`99-`10) that I worked with field recordings. So for this piece, of which I knew would accompany a story I choose to work with this technique again. As I did not have any information about the story`s content, it gave me the possibility to create my own story by recording bits and pieces from my surroundings. Those original recordings inspired and shaped the progression of the piece. Sounds from reality started shifting and altered the perceived reality into another dimensional experience.`

Tamara E. Williams comments:

"I've been listening to a lot of drone and dark ambient acts over the years and their music often works inspiring. For this project, I wanted to crossover between different forms of art. The idea of simultaneously listening, reading and watching a painting was intriguing. Ashtoreth was immediately interested in this cooperation too, which is fantastic because I like his work a lot. His track 'Whisper' inspired some parts in this story, which made the music and the words come together and fuse. Perhaps it brings a whole new dimension in reading, also along with that gloomy painting in the background."

Atavismo reveal album details

Picture
Progressive power trio Atavismo from Spain have confirmed details of their upcoming new album 'Inerte'. It consists of 5 new tracks and is due out via Temple of Torturous on April 7, 2017!

Hailing from Spain, and with a critically acclaimed debut album, Desintegración, already under their belts, Atavismoare exploring new territories with their second full length release. Breaking away from the space rock jams of their debut, Atavismo have maintained a psychedelic edge, only this time around the evolution of the band is reflected in their more compact, progressive sounds.

The writing process starts with a jam session - as many great creations have - before a firmer structure is applied to the songs. Lysergic lyrics revolve around soulful feelings, love, and bad dreams which the band describe as "existential poetry". The result, among other things, is a submersion into the Andalusian rock legacy of the legendary band Triana, without losing sight of more current means of understanding psychedelic or progressive rock from bands like Black Mountain, Wolfpeople or Motorpsycho.

Tracklist:

1. Pan Y Dolor
2. El Sueño
3. La Maldiction Del Zisco
4. Belleza Cuatro
5. Volarás

Nox Vorago reveal album details and single

Picture
Gothenburg's atmospheric Death/Black Metallers Nox Vorago have signed a deal with Alpha Omega Management. Formed in 2006, Nox Vorago's goal has always been, and always will be to create something inspired by the entire width of the metal scene, thus incorporating the elements they like into their music and creating a well-written chaos without confines.

NOX VORAGO's statement on the signing:
"We look forward to working with Alpha Omega and to the future with anticipation as to what will be achieved under united banners!"

ALPHA OMEGA Management adds:
"We're excited to welcome these chaos makers in Nox Vorago to our Family! Their music is like a dark jewel from the underworld, which captures your attention right from the first tunes!"

A great example of Nox Vorago's "well-written chaos without confines" is their new single, "At the Feet of Ereshkigal", which the band released at the midnight of February 4th-5th, and is now available on spotify / itunes (see the links below)! The single cover was created by Uduun Art. The track is taken from their upcoming album, entitled "Al Chem".

Furthermore, Nox Vorago reveal the release date for "Al Chem", due on February 26th. The album features seven songs that, all in their own way, represent some part of the inspirational dark philosophy and mystic phenomena that continues to challenge mankind's' perception of reality.  "Al Chem" was recorded at Top Floor Studios under the very talented Jakob Herrmann. It was mixed by the well known Roberto Laghi and mastered at Bohus Sound Recording by the legend Dragan Tanaskovic. More details to be unleashed soon.

Porshyne reveal new song, announce new ep

Picture
Porshyne are an atmospheric rock five-piece hailing from Brighton. Formed in 2014, early releases from the band such as “Residue” and “Warp” have helped to cement their name within the Brighton music scene, leading to them playing shows alongside the likes of Black Peaks, Valerian Swing, Town Portal and many more. Now, after having burrowed away to record their debut EP “Environmental Music” with Mark Roberts (Black Peaks, Broker, The Physics House Band), Porshyne are set to return with their most heavy, emotive and accomplished material to date.

The contexture of the EP is a sound that sits somewhere between prog, alt-rock, electronic music and post rock. “Environmental Music” is a masterfully dynamic and heavily textured collection of tracks combining melodic vocals with intricate and carefully refined guitar work, which alternates between cinematic and darker, heavier phrases that are intertwined amongst complex rhythms and subtle electronic moments.

About the forthcoming EP, Fergal Lyden (Vocals/ Guitar) said, “We’re really happy about how the record has turned out and excited to get it out for people to listen to. Mark (producer) did an amazing job of capturing what we were aiming towards, and how representative we feel this EP is of us as a band is testament to that.”

Adrian Pain & The Dead Sexy stream new song

Picture
In 2010, vocalist and songwriter Adrian Pain endured events that would have left most men shattered and broken. Unwilling to take prescribed medications for his severe depression, he found inner strength in the form of the lyrics and music that sprang from his suffering. Together with his son and drummer Ethan Clark, formed a new family in the shape of their band,Adrian Pain & The Dead Sexy. Adrian describes their music as “torment and triumph, sonic seduction.” They have transcended their initial influences of Deftones, Alexisonfire, and Of Mice & Men, to a genre of metal they have given a name of its own. “We like to call what we do ‘Allcore’ ... To break it down as far as metal sub-genres go, I think what best describes us would be a blend of Progressive & Nu-metal, with Post-Hardcore & Metalcore …or NuMetalcore if you'd like!”

Their new EP 'Mixed Messages' set for release on February 10, 2017 continues their solid chemistry of an 'Allcore' metal sound with emotionally stirring and socially conscious lyrics.

Pain describes the 'Mixed Messages' EP:

“This release is like the gateway drug to metal and heavier music in general! We appeal to a very wide range of musical tastes so guys can play us for their girlfriends, and girls can play us for the guys. If you identify another way, you can play us for whomever you’d like.  If any negative response comes out of it, it’ll be the fans that expect every song to get heavier with each effort. What I hope they notice is the constant evolution of our sound. The music itself is getting more and more diverse and progressive, while the song structures are also evolving into bigger, more complex arrangements. I want everyone that listens to this record to feel an emotional connection. I want people to relate to, and hear the MESSAGE in each track."

Damnation Plan release new single

Picture
Finnish progressive melodic death metallers Damnation Plan have released a new title track single from their upcoming album "Reality Illusion".

Drummer/songwriter/lyricist Jarkko Lunnas comments:

"Creating this album took us 3+ years of hard work, driving me and some of us almost insane during the process of recording the album almost entirely ourselves. It was a massive task but I believe it served the end result well! The album deals with separating the truth from the beliefs and seeing it (or not seeing it) through the different bubbles that we've learned to live in our stable and modern societies. We are estranged from the reality until we are forced to face it. The album delivers the message covering a whole spectrum of feelings from an atmospheric and emotional perspective, all the way to the maximal intensity."

The band is also running a Pledge Music pre-order campaign for the upcoming full length album, out March 10 2017.

By pre-ordering the album from the campaign you'll get 10+ in-depth video documentary episodes about the making of the album. The campaign can be found here: http://pledgemusic.com/damnationplan

The album was mixed by Dan Swanö (Edge of Sanity, Nightingale, Bloodbath, etc) at Unisound Studios.

Trevor Shelley de Brauw reveals new track

Picture
As he prepares for the release of his debut solo album "Uptown" on February 10th, guitarist Trevor Shelley de Brauw (Pelican, RLYR, Chord, Let’s Pet and more) has unveiled the opening track from the album.  Titled “A New Architecture,” the song is lush and meditative, and serves as a precursor to the vast soundscapes that emerge on "Uptown".

Written and recorded over the span of nearly a decade, Uptown represents a scrapbook from a formative era in de Brauw’s life, bookended by a stint on a remote tobacco farm in North Carolina and his return to the anxiety-ridden urban eccentricities of Chicago’s historic Uptown neighborhood.  "Uptown" takes a plaintive approach that unravels the meditative depth of washed-out riffs, deconstructed drones, and carefully controlled feedback.  Set for release on San Francisco’s acclaimed experimental label The Flenser, "Uptown" is a stream of consciousness sustained for too long, an aural pendulum swinging between poles of murky distress and cathartic resolve that takes shape somewhere in the hazy valleys between rock, ambient and experimental music.

Track list:

1.  A New Architecture
2.  Distinct Frequency
3.  They Keep Bowing

Lung Flower release psychedelic video

Picture
Vancouver's sludgy stoner doom grunge hybrid Lung Flower have posted their new psychedelic music video 'Beyond Burnt Out' in support of their latest album, the seven track ride 'Effigy' released during April 2016. The album is the follow up to their 2014 EP 'Death On The Crowsnest' and 2012 debut album 'Under A Dying Sun'.

The band comments on the video:

"The video was mostly shot in an abandoned house on the outskirts of Abbotsford BC. We chose this location because it was a perfect symbol for the meaning of the song, the purposely literal lyrics conveying the everyday struggle of the modern day city dwelling man. Burning the candle at both ends eventually leaves you hollow and empty, like most of this house was. We felt that this house, with its disrepair, a sad shadow of what it probably once was, served as our metaphor for a person trying to walk the edge of the abyss, the edge of alleviation and addiction. Someone who is quite literally Beyond Burnt Out."

The album is available on bandcamp.

Toby Driver (Kayo Dot) announces solo album

Picture
On the heels ofKayo Dot's 2016 album Plastic House on Base of Sky, New York City based avant-garde musician Toby Driver sustains his inexhaustible output with a solo album titled Madonnawhore.  Due out April 21st from The Flenser, the album's first single "Avignon" can be heard today.

After exploring a retro-futurist noir sound on Kayo Dot's 2014 album Coffins on Io then delving even further into electronic music with Plastic House on Base of Sky, Driver was eager to write a different kind of song. Madonnawhore represents a foray into traditional songwriting, stripped of the progressive flourishes and unpredictability of Kayo Dot. These six austere tracks are sparse and atmospheric, evoking empty spaces and the beauty sometimes inherent in death. They occupy a heretofore unexplored place in Driver's oeuvre, and were recorded primarily as a solo effort but share some lyrical contributions from Jason Byron, who also writes for Kayo Dot.

Although not a concept album, Madonnawhore is united by its exploration of the "madonna-whore complex," a psychological neurosis first identified by Sigmund Freud whereby a man feels he can only love a woman who maintains a saint-like purity, but desires to be intimate with someone he considers to be debased. This sacred/profane dichotomy has far reaching effects that are seemingly inescapable in modern society and ripe for examination.

In addition to the release of Madonnawhore, on April 21st The Flenser will reissue Kayo Dot’s beloved Hubardo album on double CD / triple LP formats.  Originally released in 2013, Hubardo is a 100-minute magnum opus that has been a longtime out-of-print fan favorite.  Look for more details and pre-orders to be announced soon.

Valfreya stream entire album

Picture
Orchestral and death metal with a hint of folk music, the prolific Valfreya have released two well-received EPs (‘First Chronicles’ and ‘Acoustic Chronicles’), an impressive 2012 debut album entitled ‘Path To Eternity’ via Maple Metal Records and have just unleashed their second ‘Promised Land’ independently on January 13, 2017.

“The album is a journey through a lot of emotions and situations, giving life to a host of varied songs, each with a different sound and personality. The story behind the album is about Eric The Red discovering America and how he defies the Gods, but pays a hefty price for that defiance. ” says Valfreya about the release. “It’s a step-up in sound quality and has more intricate guitar parts and better-written music that with every listen you can discover parts you hadn’t noticed before. On top of that we have an original sound and songs! We want to give more to people that enjoy good riffs!”

Blood of Angels reveal track from debut EP

Picture
Hailing from one of the epicenters of extreme metal, Blood of Angels are set to up the ante with their imminent release “Rise of the Fallen Gods.” This Floridian four-piece combines a vicious death metal attack with the atmosphere of black metal, all with flourishes of melody and Viking-themed lyrics. Featuring experienced musicians of the Jacksonville scene, the project combines the talents of current and former members of Motograter, Foreshadow, Denied Til Death, and Leprosy.

Like any band that is on the same page musically, Aaron Robinson (guitar), Michael Stewart (bass), Chris Iibucha (vocals) and Kevin Phillips (drums) have rolled together their collective experience from previous acts into a cold, clinical, yet passionate sound that will be unveiled on their debut EP "Rise of the Fallen Gods." With hints of Dark Tranquility and Amon Amarth among other bands making up the palette of their sound, and a slick production to accentuate the pummeling drive of the music, the band is preparing to release on the 21st of April.

The lead single “Odin’s Wrath” is available on Bandcamp and YouTube, and will soon be accompanied by a music video as well. Following the release of the EP are plans to tour their home base of Florida, as well as expanding their horizons – as the band sees the live front as the best avenue to unleash their intensity.

Sun of Gaia reveal new video

Picture
Adelaide-based progressive death metal horde, Sun of Gaia have recently launched a new video single. Entitled "Peril," the new single follows up the EP Corrode which was released in March last year.

The band comments:

"The new single 'Peril' differs from our previous EP 'Corrode' in the sense that it embraces more progressive elements through the use of clean, ambient sections, clean vocals and places a much greater emphasis on the role of keyboards and piano elements in our music. It still retains some of the heaviness and melodic death metal style of 'Corrode,' but overall it offers a more refined, mature and musically confident insight into who we are as a band today. We intended for the new single to act as a kind of 'bridge' between our sound on the 'Corrode' EP and how our next release will sound. It retains the heavier, metal elements that fans of 'Corrode' will recognise and enjoy, but listeners can expect to hear many more progressive elements on future releases that we think are previewed quite nicely in 'Peril.'"

Sun of Gaia are already working on new material; they plan to record and release their full-length debut later this year.

They say, “We’re about two thirds of the way through writing a full-length album, so our goal for the near future will be to complete the writing process and start to demo the new songs with the aim of heading into the studio to record them later on this year. In addition to this, we'll be supporting Melbourne death metal band Hadal Maw for their album launch in Adelaide in late February and expect to play a number of shows locally and interstate before the year comes to an end.”

Oparu releases  video

Picture
I think it's time for something a bit calmer, and we've found just the thing we need. Oparu is the musical endeavor of Los Angeles based songwriter, singer and actress Dianna St. Hilaire. According to the artist, the music can be described as future electro with a dark ethereal undertone, and I agree. This is blissful and beautiful pop music, sincere and introvert.

Oparu’s debut single ‘Remember Me’ is a fusion of haunting pop, paired with operatic vocals and dark experimental electro. The theme of her music is raw emotion, "everything leads back to this in life. It is our human nature. People can’t handle coming face to face with their emotions and insecurities and therefor have a polarizing experience with my music.” she reveals.

Double Experience face "Godzilla" in new video

Picture
Ottawa's nerd-rock trio Double Experience have toured the world, playing in front the masses, but nothing prepared them for their encounter with the monster known as Godzilla! Destroyer of worlds! The amazing story was all captured on film and released as a brand new video.  Double Experience released their third full-length, “Unsaved Progress” via their label Colfax Music in April of last year. Album orders are available at the band's merch store here. A deluxe edition of the album - boasting two unreleased songs, two acoustic remixes, merch discount codes, studio footage and a brand new trading card – is also available for the fastidious Double Experience collector.
