New from the Dunk! Headquarters. They unleashed another four names, two of which we at Merchants Of Air know quite well already. We're definitely looking forward to the 2017 edition!!!

Check. One. Two. Is this thing on? Alright! We're excited to announce these 4 bands joining the line-up for our next edition. We will definitely be in the audience to watch them doing their thing because chances are that these shows will be epic.
Pray For Sound from Boston, MA is not unknown to us (=understatement) since our label released Dreamer on CD in the EU and their latest album Everything Is Beautiful on vinyl and CD. So it's about time to have them on our stage as well. This will be their first EU tour. Prepare yourself and play their new album on repeat for the rest of the day (over here). Our favorite track: I Have Seen Hell and It's White.
We Lost The Sea will travel all the way from Australia to bring their latest tunes to our stage. That's right, they will be playing Departure Songs in full! If you heard the album we don't have to tell you how breathtaking this will be! This band has sorted everything out. Just watch the artwork of this album! Unfortunately the vinyl version is sold out worldwide...
All We Expected is Belgian upcoming talent. We went to visit them in their rehearsal room somewhere in Flanders fields where we learned that their custom made Ygon cabs go f*** loud. But we also heard (loud and clear) some exciting post-rock / post-metal songs from their upcoming album. If everything goes according to plan they will bring their debut album to the festival!
The Chasing Monster from Italy says to be influenced by If These Trees Could Talk, Explosions In The Sky, Mono,... So this can't go wrong. This is going to be excellent (rather heavy) post-rock with silent breaks, distorted vocal samples, exploding shreds, occasional screams and some headbanging grooves. They are working on their debut album and recently released a new song featuring Theodore Freidolph from Acres.
Already confirmed: Meniscus, Mooncake, Flash the Readies, Malämmar.

Van Halst release powerful new video for 'Questions'

Picture
Canadian gothic rockers Van Halst are asking the 'Questions' with their new music video. The video emphasizes a strong message to take action against domestic violence and rape culture among many other issues that vocalist Kami Van Halst writes in her socially conscious lyrics.

Kami Van Halst comments:

"“Questions is a very important song for us. There is so much victim blaming in our society and we wanted to draw attention to this issue. My sister (Brittney Grabill) and I wrote this song in response to a series of sexual assaults that were happening in our home town. We were appalled by the lack of focus on the perpetrator and the questions being asked of the victims such as “Well what were they doing there in the first place?” We need to stop putting the blame on the victims and shift our focus to preventing these altercations in the first place. People need to understand that violence and abuse towards another person, any person, is not ok."

Wormlight reveals new song and ep details

Picture
Swedish Melodic black metal entity Wormlight revealed a new, re-recorded  version (with new vocals) of the song 'The Bloodfields', coming off their debut ep. The band recently signed with Black Lion Records for a re-release of 'Bloodfields' and  their first full-length album set for release in 2017.

The band comments:

The Bloodfields is an eerie pilgrimage amidst the putrid, formless undergrowth of formation through shared sepulchral ingress. Centered in the ruinous garden of deathless sighs where the fiery epitaph of the first son is a fulcrum beneath the crimson-stained scepter of life and the sterile walls of silence. It envisions the very end of all things conjured as perfectly still, cold and deathly quiet. A ceaseless dirge that removes the notion of entitled grandeur. Pauper or prince, all is equal before death.

Diatonic streams new track

Picture
Swedish death metal project Diatonic is streaming a brand new song entitled "The Eyes", which is taken off the band's upcoming album "I Am The One", out now in Europe.

Diatonic is the solo project of Joakim Antman, a Swedish musician who plays bass in the likes of The Ugly, Skitarg and Overtorture. For this project, the musician shows his multi-instrumental capability and teams up with Marduk's drummer Fredrik Widigs to provide what we will simply call a swedish death metal beast!

Great news for fans of Pelican: The band have released an live-album, recorded at Dunk!Festival 2016. As many of us may recall, this was a pretty damn good gig. It's now available as a digital download or a 2 LP colored vinyl.

This is the very first live album recorded at dunk!festival. Pelican performed a one hour set at #dnk16 and besides live streaming the whole thing, the people at Dunk! also recorded (multitrack) the entire set (credits to Jannes Van Rossom). Dallas Thomas from Pelican mixed the audio. The album was mastered by Collin Jordan (Boiler Room, Chicago) before being pressed on high quality, 180g, colored (double) vinyl in a beautiful gatefold cover, designed by Error! Design, printed on inside out upgraded cardboard. Everything released on dunk!records of course. Limited to 500 copies.

We are excited to announce a new limited edition live 2xLP - Pelican Live at dunk!fest 2016.
Earlier this year we played at the 16th iteration of Belgium's Dunk!festival and it was far and away one of our favorite shows we've ever performed. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that the show had been multitracked in order to broadcast a live stream. The festival organizers were good enough to turn over the recordings to our guitarist Dallas, who spent the next several weeks preparing a proper mix of the album with the intention of giving it away on Bandcamp. When the kind folks at Dunk!records heard the finished mixes they decided that it was worth commemorating this landmark performance as a deluxe limited edition 2xLP.
Downloads are available for the taking and vinyl starts shipping next week.

Desertfest London announce another batch of names

22/11/2016

This is just in:

DESERTFEST LONDON is pleased to announce the second batch of bands who will be joining the likes of Turbonegro, Samsara Blues Experiment, Yuri Gagarin and Vodun on April 28-29-30th, 2017 in Camden. Ever-growing diversity alongside a solid selection of grass-root acts, has helped cement Desertfest as the go-to festival for doom, stoner rock, psych and all its subsidiaries, with a sixth edition set to be the most eclectic and heavy to date.

First up, we are honoured to welcome a band that needs no introduction: legendary doom metallers CANDLEMASS. Encompassing the ethos of what Desertfest has meant since its inception, Candlemass are one of the most influential and celebrated doom bands in not only Sweden’s musical history, but in heavy music history as a whole. Pure, unapologetic, true doom metal that’ll never disappoint.

A second offering from the Swedes comes in the form of stoner rock stalwarts LOWRIDER. Back in 2013, their momentous reunion after a 10-year hiatus took place exclusively at Desertfest London. It’s a privilege to once again host the return of the riff-ready heroes, who have been bringing their desert-sound to revellers since the late 90s. Also on the bill are UK party boys BLACK SPIDERS, whose fast-paced, high voltage lunacy will rattle out the cobwebs. Despite having recently announced a hiatus, these rock’n’roll maniacs will come back at Desertfest for one last blowout.

1000MODS will too be bringing their psychedelic vibrations to 2017’s line-up. Their unique commitment to a vintage sound, held up by playing with classic instruments, undoubtedly makes them a must-see act on any bill. Underground heroes  PIGS, PIGS, PIGS, PIGS, PIGS, PIGS, PIGS also make a welcome addition, with their loud and exciting blend of psych, noise and post-rock. Austin based trio THE WELL are jumping over the pond to thrash out their progressive take on heavy rock, taking that classic nostalgia and twisting it with a hearty laden of adrenaline.

London’s very own STUBB will lay out their fuzzy blues at Desertfest – greatly influenced by the 60 & 70s trio’s of the same genre, they’ve gained respect as a sold live act. Germany's WUCANdescribe themselves as “Topsy-Turvy Higgledy-Piggledy Folk-Blues-Psych-Stoner-ProtoMetal-Soul, with a pinch of confusion” - which may sound like all-over chaos, but they have truly honed their style thanks to an expert fusion of 70’s drenched goodness.

Final acts to join Desertfest London 2017 are metal killers Austin's VENOMOUS MAXIMUS, newcomers GRAVE LINES – one of the most exciting bands to come out of London – trust us, you’ll want to be there, as they are soon to become one of those acts everyone claims they heard first.
We are proud and excited for what next year has in store. But this is only the tip of the iceberg as there is much, much more to come. Stay tuned!

SubRosa release new video

Picture
Salt Lake City’s SubRosa recently released their most triumphant album to date, 'For This We Fought the Battle of Ages'.  This album is a crucial marker in the band's repertoire; musically, their trademark mix of haunting doom and innovative chamber music skyrockets to new heights, and lyrically, the album explores difficult and immediate issues relevant in America today.

The song “Troubled Cells” and the accompanying video directly address one such issue and serve as an artisic expression and vehicle of activism. In November of last year, the Mormon Church made a change to their handbook with heavy consequences for LGBTQ members who choose to marry, and any children they might have.   Since the passing of this policy, multiple suicides among Mormon LGBTQ have occurred. Many of those who have taken their own lives since last November 5th were under the age of 20.  SubRosa vocalist Rebecca Vernon made the decision to write “Troubled Cells” to speak out against these directives.

This video was shot in the forests and deserts of California by a hand-picked crew of film industry professionals from all over the country, all of whom donated 100% of their time, skills, and resources to make this project possible. The film was co-directed by Danica Vallone and Thomas Dekker.

Daniel Land announces solo album, previews first single

Picture
After a three year hiatus, Daniel Land has announced the forthcoming release of his 'In Love With a Ghost' LP, undoubtedly his most complicated and textured record to date. This album follows albums 'Love Songs For The Chemical Generation' and 'The Space Between Us' by Daniel Land & The Modern Painters. It was recorded over the three years following that group's disbanding, at a time when he seriously considered giving up making music. The first single from this release is 'New York Boogie-Woogie', along with a video based on footage Daniel Land himself filmed in New York.

Daniel Land explains, "This is an album about cities. It is an album about reinvention, and starting your life over. It is an album about growing up, finding love, and settling down. And to a lesser degree, it is about the damage that can be done to a person, or a family, by falling in love with the wrong person. With 'In Love With A Ghost', I came full circle for a while by incorporating a whole bunch of influences that pre-date my love of dream-pop and shoegaze. I really wanted to make a colourful, widescreen, detailed record. When I started the album, I didn't have a live band, and most of the tracks were written on the piano, for my own amusement, rather than for a group with three guitarists."

Ostrogoth announce new album + tour with debut album

Picture
Great news for fans of Belgian metal legends Ostrogoth:

These past few weeks basic recordings took place for what will become Ostrogoth’s first full length studio album since ‘Feelings Of Fury’, released in 1987. The recordings took place at the home studio of guitarist Tom Tas and so far twelve new songs are finished and demoed.
With the band still writing new stuff, chances are that we will have sixteen new songs finished, by the time we will enter the recording studio, late March 2017.
The new album will probably have ten tracks on it, with 'All Manners of Light', 'Better Man', 'More Than Meets the Eye', ‘Powder & Arms’ and 'Sonic Machine', being possible song titles. The new record will also contain a big epic song, that will be the longest Ostrogoth recording so far. And there's a fast song, simply entitled 'Ostrogoth'. Sounds like an anthem in the making.
So there will be a new Ostrogoth record in 2017! But don’t hold your breath yet. We are looking at a late Autumn release, not any time sooner.

In the meantime Ostrogoth will take it’s debut album on the road in 2017, with a special old school set with the entire 1984 album 'Ecstasy and Danger', plus additional classic tunes from the early days. All 2017 live shows will feature an old school set with the entire 'Ecstasy and Danger' album, plus additional classic tunes from the early days. The first dates for 2017 will be announced very soon.

The Thing With Five Eyes is The new darkjazz project from Jason Kohnen the founding member of The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble and The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation. He calls it "darker than dark jazz" and that's perfectly fine with me.

From the facebook page: "One of the tracks of the upcoming debut album contains a recording with a 10 piece chamber orchestra, inspiring to hear the partitions worked out... but mixing classic instruments is another thing though.."

The debut album is set to be released in 2017.

Can you hear that? There's a buzz, like a flow of adrenaline in expectation of absolute greatness. That greatness will undoubtedly occur several times on the upcoming edition of Dunk! Festival. On May 25-27, the Belgian town of Zottegem will once again be transformed in heaven for fans of post rock and related genres. Today, the organisation announced a first batch of names. Oh, and they included Merchants Of Air in the article too.

Early bird tickets are available now, click here
Meniscus from Sydney, Australia is not new in the scene. They've built their reputation from their start in 2005 and released three albums so far. Their latest album Refractions was released in October 2016 and it's "a mature, varied and massively immersive post-rock album" according to Merchants of Air. We couldn't agree more and can't wait to see them live on our stage. Have a listen yourself or get it in our store.
Mooncake from Russia is one of the leading bands in the instrumental music scene in Russia. But their debut album Lagrange Points(2008) was very well received worldwide. Bring your space suits because the main idea of their music is "to open the door to infinite space and cosmos in any everyday thing". This can't go wrong right?
Flash the Readies from Czech Republic released their latest album Kayos on dunk!records last week and they are eager to introduce themselves at dunk!festival2017. They used to be an indie rock band but turned completely post-rock with Kayos. And they are good at it! The album is available on 180g colored vinyl and on most digital platforms. Check them out!
Malämmar from Barcelona, Spain has been spending the last few weeks writing and recording their debut album. Vendetta will be released on dunk!records next month but is already available for pre-order for a special introduction price. They can’t wait to play the festival and show the scene what they got. This first song from their upcoming album has been playing through our speakers repeatedly for the last two days.
