Airbag came into existence in 2004. since then, they recorded three (four now) albums and a few ep's and singles. They seem to be influenced by the milder side of the rock spectrum, including bands like Pink Floyd, Archive, Anathema, Radiohead, Katatonia, Marillion and Blackfield. Besides, they also include a nice heap of blissful ambient, which brings people like Brian Eno, Robert Fripp or David Sylvian to mind.
I know, that's an impressive list of artists to be influenced by, but it also raises the bar for Airbag. And since they're doing this for twelve years now, the bar lies very, very high. After all, in twelve years a band should have a decent sound, the necessary experience and confidence in their music. So do these Norse prog rockers have what it takes? Yes, my friend, they certainly do. What they deliver on 'Disconnected' is simply epic.
I've heard a lot of bands who come close to the sound and atmosphere of Pink Floyd but, and this is me being brutally honest, I've never heard one come so close. The scenic atmosphere, the dreamy guitar solos, the gentle and minimal vocals, the elaborate ambient passages... It's all here and it all fits perfectly together. It's immediately recognizable in opener 'Killer', which is a beautiful song.
Well, all the songs are beautiful. In fact, halfway through the brilliant title track, I'm convinced that this album is a masterpiece. In my opinion, this tops anything I've ever heard Radiohead do and it rattles on the throne where Anathema sits on. How about Pink Floyd? Well, I don't think anyone could top them, but if there's one band in the world that might be today's replacement for Pink Floyd, it certainly is Airbag. This comes highly recommended, that's for sure.
