As I mentioned earlier, this Finnish quartet places themselves within the region of dark, melodic metal. Influences from doom, death and post-metal are blended into a distinct, recognizable sound. The whole is filled with strong riffs, slow to mid-tempo drums and a great alternation between grunts and clean vocals. Within this combination, title track 'No Tears' is a dark metal masterpiece and probably an audience favorite. Here we can also hear some old school heavy metal influences woven into the fabric of the music, which gives this band a lot of credibility.
'Profound Oblivion' balances somewhere in the middle between vintage doom metal and new fashioned post-metal. At this point some other bands roam through my head, including Amorphis, Katatonia and Tiamat. These were some of my favorite bands back in the day and it's really great to hear that this music is still being created at this quality. 'Suru' is completely sung in Finnish so I have no idea what it's about but I most say that this is a solid doom track again. Together, the three own songs on this e.p. make me curious about the direction of the upcoming full-length. That could be quite an interesting album.
'Missä Muruseni On' is the first of the two covers. Since I had no idea what the original sounded like, I checked it out on YouTube. The guitars perfectly play the part of the piano in the beginning, somehow reminding me of My Dying Bride. Yet, as the original turns into an ok soft rock song, Antagonist Zero completely makes it their own and blasts. 'The Lachrymal Sleep' finally not only covers but also honors the original version by being a brilliant piece of doom.
So in all, as I said before, this e.p. seems to function as a teaser for the upcoming album, trying to get people hungry for the full-length. It seems that Antagonist Zero has achieved their goal, especially with 'No Tears' itself. If you don't know this band yet, and you're into some decent dark metal, you really should check them out. If you're already a fan, this e.p. will satisfy your hunger for now...
