Because intead of raising their middle fingers to all the critics and skeptics and expanding their sound they have managed to create this: 'The Ark Work', an album that annoys as much as it intrigues. Intrigueing because it manages to somehow have an almost raga-like quality (not raeggae, raga..) and it incorporates some very interesting electronic effects to enhance the already outerworldly qualities of the music. Why annoying then? Well, because frontman Hunter Hunt-Hendrix has ditched the black metal wails and shrieks and has opted for what have to be THE most irritating vocals ever incorporated in (black) metal. Maybe the idea was for them to add a mantra-ish atmosphere to the music but instead it comes out as kind of a whiny, hiphop-ish nagging. I have never heard an album be so singlehandedly ruined by vocals.
One more thing, what's with the title? I know lyrics and titles are open to interpretation, but does that mean I can interpret 'The Ark Work' in a way that Hunt-Hendrix the album is so important some higher power orders it to be saved in some new Great Deluge? Then there's the fanfare opening and the crowd roaring samples. This isn't just a middle finger to the black metal scene, it's a middle finger to the whole music scene in general. If they were to back it up with an awesome album it would be forgiven, but now we have an album that is near perfect in its execution, only to have it ruined by Hunt-Hendrix's amazingly crap vocals and pretentiousness. I honestly don't mind pretentiousness but here it reaches levels not yet heard before. It is a damn shame because the sound mix and technical qualities are awesome.
Why Hunter? Why? I am a firm believer in that musicians should do what feels right to them, but here I wish that they would have spent a bit more time thinking about the direction they were heading... I can see them sitting in the studio going 'Hahaha! Oh man everyone's going to hate this!'... I'm just a guy with an opinion, one of the undoubtedly numerous different opinions so who cares? Certainly not Liturgy...
