Buensuceso is a Spanish band, joyfully wandering around the slowest realms of the music industry. With influences from post-rock, stoner rock, sludge metal, doom metal and drones these guys certainly came up with something immersive and varied. But what can you expect from a band that mentions Isis, Neurosis, Katatonia, Opeth and Explosions In The Sky in their biography, right?
The album opens with the 'Vultures' track, which might be a bit misleading at first. This song is heavy, with constant drones seemingly introducing something dark and fearsome. However, what follows is not as dark, harsh and pummeling as I expected and halfway through 'C.O.T.C (City of Tears Citizen)' I feel like I'm listening to an excellent post-rock album, one that I would certainly recommend.
Don't get me wrong, there is still plenty of distortion and fuzz to please the doom and sludge fans among us. When those go up, the whole thing turns into an hypnotic headbanging session where entire audiences can easily achieve a state of trance. It's like Caspian meets Dopethrone. Or maybe not, but 'Waiting For Deliverance' certainly is a massive piece of riff-worshiping, that's for damn sure. Somehow, Godflesh comes to mind on this one.
That other song with huge title seems to be the highlight of this album, effortlessly blending doomed sludge with post-rock anthems. It's eight minutes of slow mayhem, ever changing and well-varied. Hell, there's even a touch of modern classical music here. Yes, there is. I know you don't believe me but somehow these guys blended Olafur Arnalds with Neurosis and Monkey 3. I didn't know it was possible either, but here it is.
I could mention some more names, like Maybeshewill, Bersarin Quartett, Yob or Deftones but that wouldn't do much good I think. Yes, they are influences but I still feel as if Buensuceso mostly work from their gut. They crawl into a rehearsal studio, jam and experiment until magic occurs and then record that magic, for us to be enjoyed. So check out this awesome album, you rarely get a better blend of all the slow shit you like...
