Catacombs Of Doom is a horror ambient band from Athens, Greece. They have been around for awhile but I hadn't heard of them before I started listening to this album. That might also be easily explained. What kind of shows would anyone book a band like this for? Opening a black metal evening because the songs mostly sound like eerie intros? An ambient festival where the other acts run for their lives because of the terrifying sounds?
It might be safe to categorize Catacombs of Doom into the dark, or black, ambient scene. With soundscapes, deep percussion, haunting noises and grim vocals, the create a dark, frightening atmosphere, reminding me of acts like Elend or Predominance. Yet, there also seem to be some dark-folk elements present in songs like 'Corpus Animus'. Follower 'Peregrinatio' is more a soundtrack for a haunted house than a song.
So are the other tracks by the way: horrifying anthems of bleak and hopeless despair, loaded with creepy soundscapes and tortured screams. In that, 'Purgatorio Sancti' is probably my favorite track on this album. 'Fainted Eyes', the Celtic Frost cover, breaks the tone a bit since it comes close enough to the original to be a bit out of place on this album. But check it out anyway, this surely is one creepy piece of work.
