The Ex & Fendika - Lale Guma / Addis Hum

When legendary underground band The Ex set their mind to something, they will almost always create something unique and enjoyable.  Starting out as a punk outfit in 1979, this Dutch band have always been fond of experimentation and working with a whole lot of different incluences.  Over the past few years they became good friends with Fendika, an acoustic 'folk' band from Ethiopia.  Now they released a 7" which is pretty awesome.

This 7" shows two songs, which are quite similar but highly enjoyable.  From the bio: “Addis Hum” is based on “Gue”, a traditional Ethiopian Gurage song. “Lale Guma” is a song by Ayelew Mesfin and the Fetan Band. “Shellelle” is a traditional war cry. Both are chants which narrate the battles and account for the heroes, sung to boost confidence and inspiration.

The mix of rock 'n' roll and Ethiopian instruments is not only refreshing but also pretty damn good.  This is exactly what you can expect from this cooperation: uplifting rock music with a warm world music feel.  It's original, it's open minded and it's fun.  I'm sure these songs will appear in my summer-playlist quite often...

Ayuune Sule - What A Man Can Do A Woman Can Do More Better

Ever since I reviewed the Prince Buju album, I've been fascinated by this kogolo music from Ghana.  So when this 7" by Ayuune Sule reached me, I couldn't really wait to check it out.  'What A Man Can Do A Woman Can Do More Better' is a song about gender equality, accompanied only by the kogolo.  Both songs on this single are quite similar, which is not really a surprise, but they really are amazing.

The style of Ayuune Sule isn't easy to describe but maybe this will help: take some roots reggae vocals over a beatless trance song, played by only two snares.  That might be the most accurate description because the way Ayuune Sule plays his instrument creates a very trance-like atmosphere that really captures the listener's attention.

I like...
