CHVE is Colin H. Van Eeckhout, probably better known as the frontman for Belgium's sludge superband AmenRa. However, if you're looking for a massive sludge album, think again. This is Colin's bare soul, coming from deep within and showing a vulnerable, naked approach. Armed with nothing but a hurdy-gurdy and his own voice, CHVE comes up with a very surprising, and deeply emotional, ambient drone album. The album, actually more of a thirty minutes lasting epos, is produced by Dehn Sora (Treha Sektori, Sembler Deah).
'Rasa' reminds me most of other drone-ambient masterpieces, such as the works of IIVII, Dirk Serries' Microphonics and Stars Of The Lid. There's also a haunting atmosphere that somehow reminds me some Sunn O))) works. Besides, just when I've decided that I like this a lot, the whole gets even better when the percussion (and later doom rock drums) comes in, adding a martial or apocalyptic folk feel to the whole. Yep, this is exactly my cup of tea, a brilliant piece of work that any dark music fan should have in his collection.
