Equal Stones is an experimental music project from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, founded by Amandus Schaap. This album is the follow-up to his 2014 full-length 'Transgression', further exploring the possibilities of drones and soundscapes. On this new album, Equal Stones got some help from people like Benoît Pioulard, Evert Kramer and Endless Melancholy. The result is simply a beautiful ambient album, with a bit of modern classical piano thrown in.
The piano creates a hauntingly beautiful passage in 'My Reflection Is Empty', which is actually a long drone-ambient track like most of the tracks on this album. Yet, each seems to have its own character. 'Hands Of A Murderer' is darker, 'A Toast To Eternal Failure' has a more mystical sound, as if it is the soundtrack to an eerie fairytale by Tim Burton or something. I think this is also my favorite.
For ambient fans, this certainly is a must-have. It's three quarters of pure soothing soundscapes, perhaps a bit dark at times but a beautiful darkness. So yes, I do recommend this to all fans of the calmest of musical genres. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
