What we do understand, is music, especially music with guts, balls and power. That's exactly what you get on this ep, their second since 2003. Fabrik Royale blend hard rock with stoner rock and grunge. The five songs on 'The Same Machine' are strong rock songs, reminding me of bands like Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Channel Zero, Tool, Soundgarden... Yes, that means strong riffs, forceful but clean vocals and quite a distinct sound.
My favorites on this album are 'Ignoramus' and 'The Hierophant' but I also quite dig the experimental tendencies in 'Cold Print' and the psychedelic influences in 'Artificial Life'. Yet, what I'm most surprised about is the fact that Fabrik Royale often starts out sounding like a beginning rockband and evolves into a full-blown headliner. It's like the entire evolution of a band, from first rehearsal to festival mainstage in only a few minutes.
So yes, at first I had my doubts but they quickly disappeared. After a few listens, I'm quite convinced that we will be hearing more from Brownr, Loek, Deef & Vaas in the near future. The Summer is coming and there will be plenty of festival spots to fill. With this ep, Fabrik Royale certainly deserves a chance on some of them.
