Last week, while visiting my parents, I found a box of old tapes, dating back to my teenage years. Two of those are titled 'Teenage Rebels' and are loaded with brilliant old songs from The Kinks, The Searchers, Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep, among others. Somewhere, there has to be a third tape, one with Hawkwind and other vintage heavy stuff.  I remember loving these old tunes, even though I was digging deep into the world of death and black metal at the time.

I have been a part of many scenes, but somehow I always like to reach back to the vintage style of rock music, and that is exactly what Swedish band Hällas seems to do.  The most recent genre I can compare these guys with, is the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal scene.  Old Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Nazareth and Blue Oyster Cult often come to mind when I listen to these songs, certainly when Hällas unleashes those awesome twin guitars.

The ep contains four tracks, kicking off with 'Autumn In Space', a song which easily could have been present on those 'Teenage Rebels' tape.  It completely reeks of the late seventies, in a very good way of course.  'Insomnia' adds a bit of psychedelic rock and a touch of blues to that sound. My favorite is 'Hällas', another possible hard rock classic, if it were made thirty years ago. Oh dear, that sounded quite negative again, but really, it is not.

What I'm trying to say is, this really is something for those old rockers out there, the people who witnessed those first big festivals (before they became mega-events, focused on impoverishing their audience - sorry, rant).  Yet, I would also recommend this to the younger rock fans out there. Music like this is where it all came from and it's good to be remembered of those glorious days. Besides, this simply is an excellent ep. What else could you possibly want?
