Holyphant is an Italian band, founded in either September 2012 or December 2013. Their facebook page might be a bit confusing as far as the formation date is concerned, but their music certainly isn't. I've started singing 'Paranoid' by Black Sabbath three times in the choruses of opener 'Ghost Mind' and I've been floating along with these immersive psychedelic jam sessions and twin-guitar solos, reminding me of Deep Purple or Rainbow.
Now, don't get me wrong. Holyphant is not a copycat but a young band who try their best to blend all of their influences in an own style. The result feels like a quest for the perfect sound, the perfect approach to music and the perfect instrumentation (I even hear a cowbell) for the band members to express themselves. I also feel that their quest is far from over and that there's much more musical pleasure to be found.
Personally, I really dig the massive track 'The Circle', especially that highly immersive psychedelic passage with the brilliant guitar solo and odd effects. It shows what these guys are capable of if they set their minds free and let the music completely take over. I certainly like to hear more of that in the near future, on their first full-length for example. I also really love the closing track 'Heart Of The Sun', a gloomy and mysterious piece of music.
So yeah, I'm hooked and I want more. Not only that full-length but also gigs, merchandise, stickers, t-shirts, a big label with a professional producer and worldwide support. Today, these guys were promising, but tomorrow they will have to rise and become a main-event in the world of stoner rock and doom metal. What do you think, Holyphant? Are you up for the challenge? I think you can do it...
