What do you get when you throw a soul vocalist, a bunch of metalheads and a hip-hop drummer in a rehearsal studio? Well, probably not what you would expect, at least not what I expected. I already prepared to listen to another crossover metallic hip-hop act, like France often delivers, but what I eventually heard, got me off my feet and into my dancing shoes. Somehow, Moke's opened a big can of old school...

Moke's is a band from Paris, consisting of members from very different worlds but with a mutual love for stoner rock and psychedelic rock. This untitled ep is their debut, and it's a pretty interesting one. It shows an enthusiastic band with a lot of potential but also a band who aren't there just yet. I always like these kind of debuts. They make me want to follow the band and see how they grow as musicians and as a band. So yeah, I'm going to "follow" them right now.

What you get on this ep is pure, straight-forward, up-tempo rock 'n roll music, often reminding me of acts like Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes, Kyuss and pretty much everything in that genre. The songs are well written and have a decent sense of complexity but not too much. 'Don't' is a brilliant song, definitely my favorite on this debut, but I've also enjoyed the other songs a few times in the past few days. In fact, 'Antics' made me doubt this band at first, but is now my second favorite.

Why doubt? Well, I feel something in this album, something that reminds me of an upcoming adrenaline-rush. You can feel it coming and you expect it to be massive and intense. On this ep however, it remains a feeling. The rush isn't there yet but that could change in an instant, possibly when I get the chance to see Moke's live one day. What Moke's need now, is self-confidence and a decent stage performance, plus that one smash hit. I believe they can write it...

Obviously, I do recommend checking out this album to all stoner rockers out there. It's a decent debut, absolutely fun to listen and dance to. Besides, you'll get the chance to see them grow, hopefully, from a promising caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly, or something less cliché. Nevermind that, perhaps I just like this ep more and more each time I listen to it...
