Although only eighteen minutes long, having just four songs – South, After The Flood, Never Knew and Lullaby – this is a mostly ambient EP with a huge potential, that not only showcases the overwhelming talent of the musician in question, but explores and reverberates an astonishing proposal of renewal and fresh start within the confluence of principles from which the ambient music is made of.
The second song, After the Flood – besides being overall poetic, soft, peculiar and beautiful – redefines melodic little pieces of impressionistic post-rock, as an integral part of harmonies disposed within the wide layers that composes the atmosphere of ambient music, somewhat reinventing the genre, but at the same time making a real statement, beyond any true concerns regarding musical categorizations.
If you like ambient music, you should check the Flevorpark EP. It is a very gentle sound, set in the serenity of an atmosphere made of soft dreams, permeated by the peaceful logic of an eternal night. In a few words: you have to listen yourself, and feel the music flow throughout your body, in order to really believe the beautiful music this guy presents us!
Currently based in Manchester – and very soon in Leeds – Michael Hodgson is a twenty two years old talent on the rise, that learned how to play piano from a very early age, and not long after that, began writing his own music. Influenced by his favorite artists, like Moomin, Kornel Kovacs, Leon Vynehall and Hiroshi Yoshimura, Hodgson is a very eclectic and daring musician, and among the many genres that he listens to, are house music, ambient and Bossa Nova, all of which have at least some of the elements that inspires him on his constant search for the best sound.
And what the future reserves to Michael “myk” Hodgson? Well, for this brilliant musician it is, indeed, too soon to tell, but certainly, being such a vast and proficient talent, no barriers could define or limit the boundaries of his great, vast and unlimited musical genius. Since he is very young, we can almost say that he is just beginning his journey through the groundbreaking and exciting world of music. But certainly, one thing I can say about this guy: he will certainly surprise us all, in the future!
And take for granted the fact that he is just warming up!
