Several months ago I got acquainted with the guys from Oldd Wvrms when I reviewed their album 'Mater Serpentium'.  They were so happy about the review that they immediately came up with a new song ('Crawling Things') for our birthday compilation.  The song was a premiere for their new album, the one I'm writing about now.  The short version is: watch out AmenRa, the competition is murderous.  This is Belgian sludge doom at its darkest, haunting, terrifying and hypnotic.

The album actually takes off where the previous effort left us.  So in a way, this feels like meeting an old friend again after several years.  In opener 'Corrosive' the band immediately drag us down into their thick, occult driven sound.  The vocals reach a new level of aggression and intensity, blatantly smashing everything in sight.  That punishing atmosphere remains a constant throughout the entire album, making it quite an intense listening experience.

What I like most about the songs on this album, is the regular use of clean chants.  These really enhance the mysterious feel of the whole by giving it a pagan or at least very dark religious sensation.  They turn 'She Stays Behind' into a very eerie, mesmerizing song which will probably haunt your dreams for years to come.  Closer 'Erath' beautifully finished the album by turning into a frightening dark ambient track.

So in all, we're once again dealing with a highlight in the Belgian sludge scene, which is already filled with crushing albums and live performances.  I wouldn't be surprised if Oldd Wvrms reach big stages with this business card.  No doubt that they will guarantee some brutal live performances and I absolutely hope one of those will be somewhere near my hometown soon.
