Cycle of Survival is the debut album of American atmospheric and melodic black metal project Ovnev, released in the end of November. With five tracks – The Observatory, Thrill of Pursuit, Prosperous Desperation, Cycle of Survival and Suspended in Spirit – you can definitely say this is a very poetic, reflexive and philosophic album, fully inserted at the sphere of a very subjective, but linear soundscape, that works at the fulfillment of magnificent and calm melodies, aiming to transcend the obliterations of the spirit, and lead you to the innermost conscious revelations hidden at the atmospheric layers of your own soul.

With strong, but sensitive guitar lines, heading the harmonies into the a very lucid path, Cycle of Survival gives the impression that it was conceived in the middle of a dense and distant forest, exhilarated by the serenity of constant snow falling, trying to capture the embodiment of a significant overlook for the colors of life. With embellished harmonies and a mesmerizing sound, this album will really give you another look into black metal as a form of art: an overview that lies within the more introspective sidelines of harmonies that dwells into the darkest side of a truly revealed and abstract perfectionism.

While the album is not too heavy, it does feature some rapid guitars, interleaved with a more philosophic tone. Nonetheless, there is some ferocity explicitly tripping into the melodies, with some wrathful guitar lines conducting fast rhythms, in a path of lucid agony, that will increasingly dilute your soul, into a more refined version of yourself.

With originality and an identity of its own, Ovnev transforms black metal into a more aggrandizing form of art, while it manages to be exceedingly black metal at the core of the style. With a fascinating set of peculiarities, all arranged to fulfill a very objective purpose, Ovnev’s sound is permeated by serenity, lucidity and peace. It’s mesmerizing and fascinating tracks elevates the genre to a whole new set of standards, that not only fully comprehends its essence, but spreads everywhere with its profound poetic lyricism its true meaning with a genuine power and a compelling authenticity. In a few words, Cycle of Survival, Ovnev’s debut, is atmospheric black metal done right, with that few additional elements that gives to the project its own characteristics. An inspiring work, that certainly can improve the genre to a new level of artistic sensibility.
