THISISNOTABANDSHIRT - exclusive designs, created by Merchants Of Air
Sometimes an album appears in my inbox and immediately grabs my attention, even before I start listening to it.  Those albums usually promise a mix of genres which are not really comparable with each other.  Like, for instance, dub, punk, psychedelic music, African & Caribbean percussion and electronic club music. 'Impossible' you would say, but nooooo, apparently it's not.  Let me introduce you to Owls Are Not and their latest effort, simply named '2'.

Get ready for some mindbending music...

This duo formed in 2011, somewhere in Warsaw, Poland.  I have no idea what their initial mission was but judging from what I hear on '2', their music is far away from anything conventional.  Blending the weirdness of Black Dice with the intensity of Melt Banana, the experimental nature of Autechre, the psychedelic approach of Ozric Tentacles and the dubby basslines of Scorn, these Poles have come up with something highly energetic and enjoyable. Oh, and there's even some punk guitars in that too.

No genre-boundaries are safe with Owls Are Not, as they would do whatever it takes to express their chaotic and experimental mind.  Yet, the result is so immersive that it wants to make me dance.  I'm not a dancer and the neighbours would not appreciate the view, but still.

The energy coming off from this release is so intensely dynamic and full of surprising sounds, making the songs, '3', '2' and '6' perfect live tracks.  By the end, there's a long and a short version of 'Black Noise', which is hardly black nor noise but damn awesome (it's more of an experimental EBM thing, a highly chaotic version of Cabaret Voltaire).

Funny thing is, this project actually seems to be rooted in jazz music.  Yes, jazz.  That might not be very audible but in a way it's there, mainly in the everything-is-permitted experimental approach. This act is definitely going into my 'suggestions for Incubate 2016' list since I want to see this live.  Undoubtedly this will be one of the major discoveries for many people in the audience.
