Perhaps I should apologize for that equivocal word 'gothic' in the tags above, or at least explain it. After all, some bands don't want to be compared to the whole goth-scene, which is perfectly understandable. It's not because a band has a female vocalist and a melancholic style that it's automatically a gothic metal band. On the other hand, my job is to promote albums towards people who will listen to them and I have to make some comparisons. As far as this album is concerned, I'd like to push it towards fans of Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Ghost Brigade, Tristania and Katatonia.

Reveries End is a band from Finland, which should already make fans of dark metal interested. They released two demos in 2012 and spent the following years writing, rehearsing and recording this debut full-length. Their music is heavy and melancholic, gloomy and dynamic and mostly quite slow, hence the 'doom' tag. Frontwoman
Sariina Tani shows quite a versatile voice, sometimes fragile, sometimes ethereal, sometimes operatic and sometimes even coming eerily close to blackened screams.

She's backed-up by a bunch of excellent musicians who never let themselves get in the way of decent songwriting. Although mainly on the short side of the tempo-spectrum, these guys certainly know how to load a good amount of variation in their songs. 'Unwind' and the brilliant 'Descent' are perfect examples of that and you can almost feel the enthusiasm they felt when they wrote these songs. Oh, and 'Tomorrow's Fool' should win over a lot of fans, that's a world class song.

So yeah, this is an excellent album, extremely promising for a young band like Reveries End. And as much as I already like this one, I'm quite sure that there is a lot more to come from them. There is a lot of potential in these people, paths they haven't yet walked and skills they still have to discover. Given time and effort, this band might grow to mainstages at big metal festivals where they will enchant the wide audience they deserve. So check it out, this is great stuff...
