Parthenope is an album by operatic black metal artist Scuorn, released by Dusktone Records. With ten tracks, the album has all the genre main elements, as to know, rapidness, aggressiveness, fury and hostility. Nonetheless, interesting components are mixed on this album. With some discreet and subtle insightful opera, symphonic and epic elements added to the overall musicality of the work, the final result came to be quite interesting, and overtly peculiar. Intriguing as well is the vocals, that sometimes alternate between the traditional black metal style, and more guttural tones, similar to death metal. The overall melodies are generally well developed: good guitar solos, a firm and solid structure and very open harmonies do the general layout for the work in question, which is remarkably good.

Although this album did not feet my personal musical taste, the mixture of different components from so many disparate genres of music has worked very well. I have to admit that this record is amazingly intriguing, and the technical aspects are close to perfect. Very lucid, temperamental and wise, Parthenope is an excellent record, full of surprises and twists, and the audacious level of experiment taken on this album is close to remarkable.

If you appreciate a very original black metal sound, certainly Parthenope is a highly recommendable album. Heavy, fast and compromised, yet full of more splendid and artistically genuine harmonies, that gracefully shapes and crystalizes the outlines of the music, you can certainly say that this is a very different and interesting black metal album.

Like I have pointed out above, this album hasn’t met my personal musical taste, but as far as criteria and standards are willing to go, Parthenope is a truly rewarding album. Full of interesting, creative and well-constructed melodies, the record has unique features, which makes its style to be classified as highly original. As far as my evaluation concerning technical aspects, the album easily reaches a path above all the ordinary standards. The sound is perfectly clean, the production values are outstanding, and the instruments are amazingly well played.

If you are open to more different, genuine and authorial types of black metal, I strongly suggest you to listen to Parthenope, by Scuorn. The creativity flows are free on this album, so you will have to be very open-minded. But certainly you will be positively pleased with this highly interesting and brave record.
