Canadian trio The Whorehouse Massacre would no doubt be willing to lead the ranks, and when they do, their music will certainly cause loads of cracks on the city's concrete structures. Influenced every fuzz-supplier from Black Sabbath to Weedeater, these guys come up with a harsh, intense and brutal version of sludge doom. The music is primitive, the vocals growl and the sheer heaviness of the whole is immense.
The songs on this album are slow, torpid pieces of sludge metal where complexity has been replaced by a massively crushing sound. You might indeed say that The Whorehouse Massacre are one of the heaviest bands in the sludge world, in that aspect perhaps comparable to acts like Conan, Yob or Dopethrone. The music drives on elementary power chords, heavily distorted and downtuned, much to the delight of many sludge fan I believe.
That being said, don't underestimate these guys. Although basic, songs like 'Buried In Darkness' and 'The Black Coast' are still highly immersive pieces of music, well capable of making large audiences of doom fans headbang themselves into a state of trance. 'Sewer Dreams' adds a little melody, adding a psychedelic effect to the already hypnotic sound.
The Whorehouse Massacre surely is one devastating vehicle and I'm afraid they will be on their way to crush the world soon. Best thing you can do when you they arrive in your town, is go to the gig. At least there you will be eliminated quickly by the sheer force and volume of the music instead of perishing in the lifeless ruins they will leave your city in. Recommended? Hell yeah!
