After all the metallic violence I've been listening to for this webzine, sometimes I need something a little different.  Luckily, sometimes we get quite surprising albums in genres we don't expect.  In the past we already reviewed some jazz albums, especially the dark variant and we're planning on continuing that.  After all, in recent years, jazz music started to lose its elitist image and blend in with other musical styles.  That resulted in the great sounds of darkjazz (Bohren, Radare, Dale Cooper), drone jazz (Barchan) and heavy jazz (Dead Neanderthals, The Shining).  Let's add another one: trance jazz.

Tripes is a trio from Paris (France) that has come up with a strange, hypnotic mutant-form of jazz.  The weapons of choice here are drums, clarinet and double bass.  This debut album consists of two tracks, each clocking off at around twenty minutes.   In that time, Tripes manages to combine minimal pieces of music into something repetitive and trance-inducing.  Slowly, the songs alternate but they always maintain that strange, eerie atmosphere.  I guess that's why they call this 'Suicide Jazz'.

Now, I admit, I had to listen to this album a few times before I really got into it.  But now, I absolutely love listening to 'Why Tripes?' and 'Omnia vanitas', as the songs are called. My favorite remains the first one, which is the easiest to digest.  The second one is a bit more experimental but nonetheless a nice piece of work. So yes, I guess it's safe to say that this is an excellent piece of music, dark but playful, repetitive but well-varied.  If you're a fan of experimental music, this certainly is something you should check out and indulge yourself in.
