'How about a black metal act and a classical composer releasing a split 7" together", someone must have thought.  My first thought, when I read the biography without listening to the album, was 'why?'.  To be honest, I expected one soothing piece of classical, cello-based, music and one fierce black metal song.  I didn't expect the two to fit together this well.  I guessed I missed the 'both acts are stepping outside of their genre boundaries' sentence at first.

Jennifer Christensen is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who plays guitars, cello, violin, drums, harp and piano.  She is probably most known for her work with the chamber group Disemballerina and her solo project Møllehøj.  For this release, she composed an eerie piece of classical music, nudging towards the bleak and haunting atmosphere of black metal.  The piece is raw, edgy and often frightening, which is rare in modern day classical music but intense enough to gain your absolute attention.

Twilight Fauna, a one-man atmospheric metal project, seems to continue on the haunted path.  In a way his song on this split can be seen as a noisy black metal song without drums or screams.  It reminds me most of some harsh noise acts I've seen live.  With piercing guitar noise, Twilight Fauna did indeed step out of his genre boundaries but kept the intense dark atmosphere that black metal fans love so much.

In all, this is a nice addition to any collection where there's room for dark, grim music.  So check it out and indulge yourself in some unusual bleakness.  You know you want to...
