Death, none of us can escape it. Some people think they can but they too will perish at one point in time. Some people lose the battle against diseases like cancer, others voluntarily step out of life. Two completely different ways to reach the exact same outcome. This is the story of the two friends who 'The Sum Of Contradictions' is dedicated to. A sad story indeed, but in sadness there is always beauty.

Unothera comes from 'Oenothera', which is a nocturnal flower and a very useful one too (according to Wikipedia). Unothera is a band from The Netherlands, a trio seemingly devoted to nineties doom metal with a gothic edge. This ep contains two epic doom metal songs, certainly recommended for fans of My Dying Bride, Saturnus and Swallow The Sun. The songs are connected through the piano trilogy 'Hjerst - Winter - Maitiid'.

'The Sum Of Contradictions' and title track 'Broken (Requiem' are solid tracks. They contain plenty of variation, both in the music and in the sometimes clean and sometimes growling vocals. My first reference was Anathema or Katatonia until the My Dying Bride influences completely started to shine through, probably because of the great use of atmospheric keyboards. In any way, this simply is a highly promising ep and I'm curious to hear more about these guys.
